Richard Mille Cup brings century-old yachting history back to the Clyde

Historic wooden yachts have returned to their spiritual home on the Clyde in Scotland. The Richard Mille Cup gathers a fleet of towering classic vessels to battle over 10 days of intense racing. These designs stretch back more than a century, representing the pinnacle of historic maritime architecture.

The Fife Dynasty and Local Heritage

Many competing vessels trace their origins directly to the local waters. The legendary Fife Dynasty designed and constructed several of these boats in Fairlie, just across the water from the racing lanes. Among the notable entries is Moonbeam IV, a 32-meter gaff cutter widely considered one of the most beautiful yachts afloat. A gaff cutter relies on a four-sided mainsail and a single mast capable of carrying multiple head sails.

Another local legend, Saskia, is an 8-meter yacht built in 1930. The vessel holds a storied past, having represented Great Britain at the 1936 Olympic Games in Kiel, Germany.

Strict Entry Criteria and Historic Silver

This is not an open regatta. The event remains tightly guarded and operates strictly by invitation. To qualify, yachts must have been constructed before 1939 or exist as a highly accurate replica. Additionally, they must meet a minimum waterline length of 10 meters, keeping the field focused on substantial, historic hulls.

Winners compete for a towering one-meter-tall silver trophy. Crafted by Garrard & Co, the same silversmiths behind the original America's Cup trophy, the prize reflects the deep heritage of the event.

Pure Sailing Without Modern Tech

The regatta offers a stark contrast to modern high-tech racing. You will find no carbon fiber, no hydrofoils, and no digital shortcuts here. Sailors rely purely on wooden masts, canvas, and manual rigging. It is a grueling, tactical test of seamanship where classic design meets raw physical effort.
