Jason Onsi redesigns 465-square-foot Malibu trailer with custom walnut

Designing a home within a tight footprint requires letting go of traditional spatial assumptions. In Malibu's legendary Paradise Cove, interior designer Alana Marie teamed up with former owner Jason Onsi to rethink what a mobile home can be. Instead of treating the 465-square-foot Paradise Cove Trailer as a series of cramped, closed-off boxes, they reimagined it as a single, cohesive organism. The resulting design functions with the high-performance efficiency of a luxury yacht cabin.

Why Millwork Defines Small-Scale Luxury

The secret to this transformation lies in bespoke carpentry rather than loose furniture. Jason Onsi, a partner at millwork firm Casa Studios, clad almost the entire interior in rich walnut and warm cedar. This deliberate material choice creates a grounding, continuous visual plane. When you eliminate visual noise and distracting transitions between different floor and wall finishes, a tiny space instantly feels larger, quieter, and more intentional. True luxury in small footprints is about knowing the precise intention behind every detail.

Thinking in Square Inches

In a compact layout, standard solutions fail. The designer and owner systematically addressed every zone by shifting their perspective from square feet to square inches.

The Galley Kitchen and Multifunctional Island

The original kitchen layout was a cramped L-shape that stifled flow. By introducing a massive central island, the team established a multipurpose hub that acts as a dining table, a workspace, and a social anchor. Pocket-sized appliances, like a concealed drawer dishwasher, keep the footprint tidy. Every wall serves as active storage, using magnetic knife racks and hanging rails to free up precious counter space.

The Multi-Slash Living Zone

In the main living space, a custom u-shaped built-in sofa serves multiple purposes. It functions as a cozy lounge, hidden surfboard storage, and a guest bed. By running the walnut flooring up the back of the kitchen island, they created a seamless waterfall effect that links the two zones.
