Qatar, officially the State of Qatar, is a country in West Asia occupying the Qatar Peninsula on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It shares a land border with Saudi Arabia to the south, with the rest of its territory surrounded by the Persian Gulf. Doha is the capital, home to over 80% of the country's inhabitants.
Qatar is known for its massive reserves of oil and natural gas, which are the world's third-largest. This has led to it becoming a high-income economy. Key attractions include its unique landscape, characterized by a mostly low, barren plain covered with sand, as well as features like the Khor al Adaid ("Inland Sea") with rolling sand dunes. Qatar is actively developing both heavy and light industry, concentrating on in-country resources.
While Qatar held a partial Shura Council election in 2021, it moved to abolish those elections altogether in 2024 and reverted to a fully appointed Assembly. Qatar has also been focused on improving domestic welfare, including establishing advanced healthcare and education systems and expanding the country's infrastructure.
