The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), also known as Congo-Kinshasa, is a Central African nation and the second-largest country on the continent by land area. Bordered by nine countries, including the Republic of the Congo, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Angola, its geography encompasses a vast central basin, a low-lying plateau, and mountains/volcanoes in the east. The country lies on the Equator and is primarily covered by dense tropical rainforests. Kinshasa is the capital, largest city, and economic center. French is the official language, although over 200 indigenous languages are also spoken.
The DRC is known for its rich natural resources, including diamonds, gold, copper, cobalt, and oil. Mining is a major economic sector. The country is also famed for its biodiversity, with attractions like Virunga National Park (home to mountain gorillas and active volcanoes) and Kahuzi-Biega National Park (habitat of eastern lowland gorillas). Other key attractions include Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano with a lava lake, and the Congo River. However, the DRC faces challenges including political instability, conflict in the eastern regions, and humanitarian crises. As of February 2026, the UN is involved in talks aimed at reducing violence between the Congolese government and the M23 armed group.
