Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. This occurs when genetic changes interfere with normal cell growth and regulation. Cancer is a major public health problem worldwide, responsible for nearly 10 million deaths globally in 2020, which is approximately one in six deaths. The most common types of cancer are breast, lung, colon and rectum, and prostate cancers. Around one-third of cancer deaths are linked to modifiable risk factors such as tobacco use, high body mass index, alcohol consumption, low fruit and vegetable intake, and lack of physical activity.

In the United States, projections for 2026 estimate approximately 2.1 million new cancer cases and 626,140 cancer deaths. While overall cancer mortality rates have steadily declined since 1991 due to factors like reduced smoking, earlier detection, and improved treatments, disparities persist across different racial and ethnic groups. For example, American Indian and Alaska Native populations have the highest cancer mortality rates for certain cancers. Increasing rates for certain cancers and the growing burden of disease in younger adults, especially women, pose challenges to continued progress.
