Founded as BankAmericard by Bank of America on September 18, 1958, in Fresno, California, it was later rebranded as Visa. Visa does not issue cards, extend credit, or set rates and fees for consumers; instead, it provides financial institutions with Visa-branded payment products. Ryan McInerney is the current Chief Executive Officer, and John F. Lundgren serves as the chairman.
Visa operates one of the world's largest payment networks, offering processing, authorization, clearing, and settlement services for credit, debit, and prepaid card transactions. Visa's global network, VisaNet, processed 257.5 billion transactions worth US$14.2 trillion in 2025. Visa has also expanded its cross-border payments partnership with UnionPay to facilitate remittances and payouts into China. Visa is also focusing on AI-enabled advancements, including Visa Intelligent Commerce, and new stablecoin partnerships.
