Before you hit the water, ensure your toolkit is ready for combat. You will need a reliable boat breaker or high-leverage tensioner to achieve the necessary rig loads. Keep tension gauges on hand to verify settings across the shrouds and lowers. These aren't suggestions; they are the metrics of performance that differentiate winners from the middle of the pack.

Execution: Setting the Stays

1. Engage the Forestay: Apply primary rig tension through the forestay. Your jib halyard now acts like a Cunningham, used only to adjust sail depth, not structural integrity.
2. Tune the Shrouds: These wires must hold the mast upright and provide pre-bend. On a twin trapeze boat, the windward shroud might go slightly slack at maximum righting moment. If it’s swinging wildly, you lack tension; if it never goes slack, you’re over-compressing and losing power.
3. Calibrate the Lowers: Use the lowers to support the mast near the gooseneck. This prevents the kicker from bowing the bottom of the mast too far forward.
4. Set the Cap Shrouds: The cap shrouds maintain the upper mast tip. Tighten them enough so the leeward wire only goes slack when you reach peak power.

Troubleshooting the Curve

Watch your sail. If you see creases running from the clew toward the mast near the spreaders, your lowers are too loose. This indicates the mast is bending beyond the sail's design. Tighten the lowers until the creases vanish, resulting in a smooth, aerodynamic curve. Conversely, if you can’t point high, your cap shrouds are likely too loose, allowing the mast tip to fall off to leeward.
