Embracing the Beautiful Chaos: Navigating Life's Uncertainties with a Melodic Mindset
Facing Life's Inherent Flux
Life, in its essence, is a continuous journey through uncertainty. One might even describe it as a human manifestation of entropy, a fundamental concept in physics where all natural systems tend to move from states of order towards disorder. This perspective suggests that confronting the unknown is not merely an option, but an inescapable aspect of our daily existence. Instead of viewing uncertainty as a void or a lack of direction, it can be reframed as a vibrant landscape teeming with infinite possibilities.
Haider Mustehsan, a musician and creative entrepreneur, shares a compelling personal narrative that beautifully illustrates this very principle. His formative years were marked by frequent relocation due to his father's armed forces career. Moving between nine cities, including Mulāan, Islamad, Lahore, Gujarat, Bhawalpur, Peshawar, Karachi, Moscow, and Ukraine, meant a constant cycle of establishing and then dissolving connections. This early exposure to constant change made uncertainty a familiar companion, equipping him with a unique perspective on navigating life's unpredictable currents.

The Five Pillars of Uncertainty in a Creative Life
Haider delves into five specific uncertainties that frequently challenge those on a creative path, particularly musicians. These insights, however, resonate deeply across any endeavor where passion meets reality.
First, there is the uncertainty of beginning. Starting a new venture, whether it is learning an instrument or stepping onto a stage for the first time, is often fraught with apprehension. Haider recounts buying his first green mini-guitar at Bach Electronics in Islamad's F7 Marcus at age nine. Initial attempts at singing and playing were met with discouraging feedback from family and friends. Yet, he persevered, practicing until he faced his inaugural public performance at a gramathon hosted by LGS1 at City School Shalomar campus in Lahore. The anxiety of potentially forgetting lyrics or performing poorly was palpable. A pivotal moment occurred backstage when another performer, despite a significant misstep, calmly recomposed and restarted, earning the audience's admiration. This demonstrated that the essence of performance lies not solely in perfection for the audience, but in the artist's internal connection to their craft.
Next, the uncertainty of creativity emerges. Once the foundational skills are acquired and initial performances are behind you, the challenge shifts to original expression. Many artists find comfort in performing covers, a beautiful form of homage. However, true artistic growth necessitates the courage to compose original melodies and lyrics. Haider candidly admits there is no instant solution to creative blocks. His approach involved persistent, often unrewarding, daily effort over five to six years, resulting in countless songs and lyrics, 99 percent of which may never be heard. This iterative process of experimentation, even with seemingly wild and unconventional ideas, is crucial for unlocking genuine creative flow.
Following this, artists encounter the uncertainty of identity. For Haider, a self-described third-culture kid shaped by diverse experiences across multiple countries and exposed to a wide range of musical influences, from the classical sounds of Medi Hassan and Kashor Kamar to the rock anthems of Iron Maiden and Metallica, defining his unique sound was particularly challenging. In the Pakistani music scene, where artists often carve out specific niches like Sufi, pop, or rap, blending diverse genres felt like an uphill battle. Through sustained effort and the fusion of different musical styles, he eventually landed on what he and his collaborators consider pioneering: Afrobeat Pakistani pop, a distinct identity born from his unique journey.
Then comes the uncertainty of industry. The transition from a beloved hobby to a viable career is a significant hurdle. Haider’s family, emphasizing education, encouraged him to pursue degrees in political science, sociology, and peace and conflict studies. He even spent two years working at the UN after graduation. Despite these achievements, a persistent inner voice urged him to pursue his heart's true calling. Taking a leap of faith, much to his parents' initial disappointment, he entered the music industry full-time. He quickly learned that the glamorous facade often associated with entertainment belies a challenging reality. Success within this uncertain landscape, Haider learned, hinges on unwavering self-belief in one's work and craft, enabling navigation through both supportive allies and challenging adversaries.
Finally, the most pervasive of all, the uncertainty of self-doubt. This internal struggle is a universal human experience, impacting everyone at some point. The defining factor is how one chooses to confront it: by embracing the challenge or shying away. For artists, self-doubt frequently surfaces before performances. Haider describes this as a voice that questions one's capabilities. Overcoming it, he suggests, involves practicing positive self-talk, treating oneself with the same kindness and encouragement one would offer a loved one. This deliberate mental shift transforms self-doubt from a hindrance into a catalyst for growth.
Composing Your Life's Melody
The journey through these uncertainties, Haider reveals, ultimately leads to the uncertainty of greatness. This is where chaos can surprisingly yield extraordinary opportunities. He recounts a dramatic personal anecdote from this year: while in the security line at a New York airport, preparing to fly back to Pakistan, he received a life-altering phone call. His friend asked if he wanted to perform at Coachella, the world's biggest music festival. The decision was immediate and profound: miss the flight and rehearse for Coachella, or continue home and let the opportunity pass. Without hesitation, he turned off his phone, left the airport, and committed to the opportunity, leading to a month of intense rehearsals. Standing on the Gobi stage at Coachella, hearing Lady Gaga perform on the main stage nearby, was a surreal experience. Stepping out to declare, "What up, Coachella? This is Haider Mustehsan from Islamad, Pakistan," was the culmination of that nine-year-old boy's dream, a testament to embracing the unpredictable.
The Art of Thriving in Chaos
The future is not a predetermined path we passively enter; it is a canvas we actively paint with our choices. Uncertainty, rather than being an obstacle, is the raw material, the beautiful chaos, from which we can create our unique melodies and music. By acknowledging entropy as life's natural state, by diligently working through creative blocks, by forging a distinct identity from diverse influences, by navigating industry challenges with conviction, and by transforming self-doubt into self-affirmation, individuals can thrive. The invitation stands: embrace the chaos, make your own music, and compose a life rich with purpose and unexpected greatness.
