Clipless pedals win on power but flats survive the hundred kilometer test
The Eternal Pedal Debate
Choosing between clipless pedals and flat pedals is a rite of passage for anyone pushing their limits on two wheels. As a lifelong advocate of locking in, I know the immediate confidence that comes from being bolted to the machine. But does the average rider actually need to make the jump, or are we just clinging to tradition?
The Flat Pedal Shock
Most purists dismiss flat platforms as tools for casual commutes. That is a mistake. Testing flats on a grueling 100-kilometer ride proved surprisingly comfortable. They did not drag down performance or cause agonizing hot spots. If your goals lean toward long, steady miles without the stress of being locked to the frame, flats are more than capable.
Why Locking In Matters
Despite the comfort of flats, clipless pedals earn their keep when the intensity spikes. Security is the main draw. You are locked into a consistent position, eliminating the constant micro-adjustments that waste energy on flats. Once muscle memory takes over, the connection feels like an extension of your own body.

Power Transfer and Short Bursts
Where the clipless system truly dominates is raw power transfer. During short, high-intensity intervals or vertical climbs where you must stomp on the pedals, the rigid connection ensures every watt moves you forward. You do not just push; you pull, maintaining a fluid stroke.
The Final Verdict
If you want comfort and simplicity, stick with flats. You will not lose as much performance as the purists claim. But if you crave speed, efficiency, and absolute security on technical terrain, make the switch. It requires practice, but the connection is worth the effort.
