Tailfin rack system turns Orbea Orca into rugged bikepacking machine
Swap the Axle to Carry the Load
To transform a featherweight carbon road bike like the Orbea Orca into an overnight adventure rig, you must change how you mount your gear. Standard lightweight road frames lack eyelets for traditional racks. You solve this by swapping your stock rear thru-axle for a dedicated, threaded axle. This simple swap routes all the luggage weight directly through the strongest part of your frame: the hub axle itself.
Mount the Rack and Lock It Down
Traditional soft seat packs sway like a pendulum when you climb out of the saddle. It ruins your rhythm and saps your energy. Install the Tailfin rack using its integrated quick-release pannier mounts on your new thru-axle. The rigid arch clamps directly to the seatpost and axle. This dual-connection design creates a rock-solid triangle that eliminates tail wag and keeps your bike handling like a razor.

Load the Heavy Gear First
Mount the main Tailfin Cargo Bag onto the top of the rigid arch. Keep your heaviest gear—like stoves, tools, and spare clothing—centered and low in this main chamber. Saving your frame's center triangle for frame bags lets you balance the load. Use the frame bags to store high-rotation items, plenty of high-calorie trail snacks, and essential maintenance gear.
Set and Measure Your Tire Pressures
Extra weight means your tire pressure must adapt. Running standard road pressures with a loaded bike invites pinch flats and harsh rides. Use a high-quality tool like the Topeak E-Booster pump to inflate your tires and read exact real-time pressures. Dialing in the correct pressure ensures maximum traction on rough roads while protecting your rims from damage under load.
