Android 15 is the fifteenth major release and the 22nd version of the Android mobile operating system. It's internally codenamed "Vanilla Ice Cream". The first developer preview was released on February 16, 2024, followed by the first beta on April 11, 2024, and the final source code on September 3, 2024. The official release for Google Pixel devices occurred on October 15, 2024. As of January 2026, 22.51% of Android devices use Android 15. Development of Android 16 is underway, with the possibility of an earlier release than usual.
Android 15 focuses on security, privacy, and user experience enhancements. Key features include a Private Space for sensitive apps, Theft Detection Lock using AI, and partial screen sharing. The OS offers improved customization with customizable fonts, colors and widgets for lock screens. There's also better in-app camera controls, dynamic performance improvements, sensitive notification management, and a notification cooldown feature. It has improved support for satellite networks, enhancements to the built-in PDF reader, and app archiving.
