Samsung DeX (Desktop eXperience) is a software platform developed by Samsung that extends the functionality of select Galaxy smartphones and tablets into a desktop-like environment. It allows users to connect their mobile device to an external display, keyboard, and mouse for a more PC-like experience. Samsung first introduced DeX with the Galaxy S8. The DeX platform is available on the Galaxy S, Note, and Z Fold lines, as well as Galaxy Tab S series tablets from the Tab S4 onward.
Key features of Samsung DeX include a desktop-like interface with resizable windows and support for keyboard shortcuts. Users can access apps, work on documents, and perform other tasks in an environment optimized for productivity. DeX supports both wired (HDMI, USB) and wireless connections to monitors and TVs. Some devices, like the Galaxy Tab S series and Z TriFold, have DeX built-in, which allows the user to utilize the platform without connecting to an external monitor. Samsung DeX also allows users to use their phone as a trackpad.
The original DeX required a dedicated docking station, but newer devices can connect with just a USB-C cable or wirelessly. While the DeX software platform is included with compatible Samsung devices, accessories such as the DeX Station or DeX Pad were previously sold separately, with prices ranging from $40 to $150. These accessories are still available for purchase through retailers like Walmart and eBay.
