Bipolar disorder, frequently termed bipolar depression, is a complex neuropsychiatric condition marked by drastic, maladaptive shifts in energy, perception, and mood. After surviving a World War II prison camp, Cade theorized that mania was caused by a chemical buildup in the brain that patients eventually urinated out. To test his theory, Cade injected urine from manic patients into guinea pigs. Finding the urine highly toxic, he isolated its urea and uric acid. To dissolve the uric acid into an injectable solution, he used lithium as a solvent, creating lithium urate. When injected, the solution unexpectedly calmed the animals. Because the disorder stems from deep chemical and neural circuit disruptions, prescription medication managed by a board-certified psychiatrist must serve as the foundation. However, combining clinical tools maximizes recovery. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients identify behavioral triggers, while interpersonal and social rhythm therapy addresses social connections and daily routines. For treatment-resistant depression, electroconvulsive therapy remains an option, though issues like high cost, anesthesia requirements, and temporary memory loss limit its use. Beyond prescription drugs, specific supplements offer measurable support. Studies show that high-dose omega-3 fatty acids—specifically 9.6 grams of fish oil daily—can substantially reduce bipolar depressive symptoms over a four-month period. Additionally, inositol can help manage anxiety and improve sleep quality. Standard lifestyle habits, including consistent sunlight exposure, regular exercise, and healthy sleep schedules, also support the nervous system. The Fine Line Between Mania and Creativity While the symptoms of mania are highly disruptive, history shows a persistent connection between mood disorders and creative output. Historical biographical data reveals that creative professions, especially poetry, writing, and acting, show a much higher incidence of mood disorders than careers in the sciences or military. In fact, research indicates that up to 90 percent of eminent poets met the criteria for mania or depression. Among professional actors, roughly 30 percent experienced manic episodes.
