iMessage is an instant messaging service developed by Apple, launched on October 12, 2011. It is exclusively available on Apple platforms, including iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and visionOS.
Key features include sending text messages, images, videos, and documents. iMessage offers delivery and read statuses, and end-to-end encryption for secure communication between sender and recipient. Users can also share location data and stickers, and third-party developers can create custom extensions for iOS and iPadOS. Recent updates include the ability to bold, italicize, underline, and strikeout text, along with animated effects for text and emojis. Users can schedule messages and react to them with any emoji. iMessage also supports RCS (Rich Communication Services) messaging for improved communication with Android devices. In situations where Wi-Fi or cellular connections are unavailable, newer iPhone models can send texts, emojis, and Tapback reactions via satellite.
Apple does not charge for sending iMessages. iMessage uses an internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data) instead of the carrier's SMS system. Sending messages, photos, or making calls via iMessage uses data. iMessage is available on any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 5 or later, Macs running OS X Mountain Lion or later, and Apple Vision Pro running any version of visionOS. To use iMessage, users need an active Apple ID and must enable iMessage in their device's settings.
