GPT-5, a multimodal large language model developed by OpenAI, was launched on August 7, 2025. It is the fifth in the series of generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) foundation models. GPT-5 is accessible to users of the chatbot products ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, as well as to developers through the OpenAI API. Sam Altman, the chief executive officer of OpenAI, referred to GPT-5 as "a significant step along the path to AGI".
GPT-5 integrates deeper reasoning capabilities, previously found only in its o-series models, directly into its architecture. This model can analyze text, images, and audio, summarize content, and generate new text content. It also features reasoning routing, improved accuracy, enhanced writing, multimodal processing, and advanced safety measures. GPT-5 has demonstrated state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks testing mathematics, programming, finance, and multimodal understanding. Improvements over its predecessor models include faster response times, better coding and writing skills, more accurate answers to health questions, and lower levels of hallucination. GPT-5 supports a context window of up to 400,000 tokens.
OpenAI's pricing for GPT-5 models is structured around token usage. For example, GPT-5.2 has a price of $1.750 per million input tokens and $14.000 per million output tokens, while GPT-5.2 Pro costs $21.00 per million input tokens and $168.00 per million output tokens. GPT-5 mini is a more budget-friendly option, priced at $0.250 per million input tokens and $2.000 per million output tokens.
