The Ritual of Lethal Etiquette Modern mythology paints the historical duel as a lawless, blood-soaked shootout. In reality, dueling in the Georgian and Victorian eras operated under an incredibly strict, highly formalized framework known as the Code Duello. This elaborate set of rules governed everything from the initial insult to the final discharge of weapons. Rather than maximizing casualties, these rules functioned primarily to contain violence, de-escalate tensions, and restore personal honor without guaranteeing a corpse. Walking the Ten Paces Once a challenge was issued, the participants could not simply turn and shoot. The ritual required deliberate, structured physical spacing. Opponents walked ten paces away from each other, turned, and waited. The entire process relied heavily on "seconds"—trusted companions who managed the logistics and acted as arbiters of the affair. A second would ask, "Are you ready?" before calling out the command to "Present." This command served as the official signal to fire, leaving no room for chaotic, premature action. The Mechanics of the Exchange If the first shooter fired and missed—whether due to nerves, a poorly adjusted hair trigger, or deliberate intent—the dynamic shifted instantly. The second shooter did not have to return fire immediately to kill. Under the strict progression monitored by the seconds, a designated countdown like "one, two, three, fire" dictated when the remaining shooter could take their turn. If a duelist chose to pass on their turn, they forfeited their shot entirely, yet still fulfilled their societal duties. Satisfying the Demands of Honor Once the firing ceased, the seconds re-entered the scene to formally negotiate. They would ask if the obligations of honor had been satisfied. Usually, both parties happily agreed. Deliberate missing, or "deloping," allowed gentlemen to prove their bravery by facing death without actually committing homicide. Consequently, roughly ninety percent of these encounters concluded with both participants walking away alive, their reputations successfully preserved.
