With hundreds of flavors available, gamers face a confusing decision. To clear the air, we analyzed six prominent gaming-focused distros: CachyOS, Bazzite, Garuda Linux, Pop!_OS, Nobara Linux, and ChimeraOS. The Engine: Kernel and Mesa Gaming performance on Linux relies on two critical components. The Linux Kernel manages your hardware, while the Mesa 3D Graphics Library provides the vital Vulkan drivers. For Windows-native games, Proton translates DirectX calls into Vulkan, which Mesa then feeds to your GPU. In short, newer software means faster frame rates. Underwhelming Variances and One Major Warning Testing across *Cyberpunk 2077* and *Black Myth: Wukong* yielded remarkably flat results. Most distros performed identically. However, *Forza Horizon 5* exposed wild performance volatility in 1% low frame rates across all configurations, highlighting the need for frequent system updates. Garuda Linux disappointed during testing. Its bloated, highly customized "Dragonized" desktop environment and default Zen kernel actively crippled performance. While users can swap these components out, doing so requires extra steps that beginners should avoid. The Verdict Skip the complexity. CachyOS and Bazzite are our top recommendations.
