The "Apple Car," codenamed "Project Titan," was a research and development effort by Apple to create an electric, self-driving car. Initiated around 2014, the project aimed to produce a fully autonomous vehicle, even exploring designs without a steering wheel or pedals. However, after numerous delays, changes in leadership, and strategic revisions, Apple officially canceled the project in February 2024.
Although Apple never publicly acknowledged the car, reports indicated that around 5,000 employees were involved as of 2018. Over its lifespan, "Project Titan" explored partnerships with various automotive companies, including Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Kia, but none materialized into a concrete manufacturing agreement. Features explored included advanced battery technology, lidar sensors for autonomous navigation, and deep integration with Apple's software ecosystem, potentially incorporating Siri for vehicle control. While a specific price range was never formally announced, analysts speculated a potential price point of around $100,000. Following the project's cancellation, most of the "Apple Car" team's resources were redirected towards generative AI initiatives within Apple.
