Vilcabamba is a village in the Loja Province of southern Ecuador, approximately 45 km south of the city of Loja. The name "Vilcabamba" comes from the Quichua words "huilco pamba," meaning "sacred plain," a reference to the sacred trees (Anadenanthera colubrina) that grow in the region. Another translation suggests it means "sacred valley". It's often called the "Valley of Longevity" due to the long lifespans of some residents, although recent studies suggest these claims may be exaggerated. In late August 2023, Vilcabamba was inducted into the Pueblos y Rincones Mágicos del Ecuador (Magical Villages and Corners of Ecuador) program, which recognizes destinations with strong cultural identities.
The village is known for its beautiful scenery, mild climate, and wellness retreats, attracting tourists and expats. Popular attractions include the Rumi Wilco Natural Reserve, home to diverse bird species, and the El Palto waterfall. Hiking to the summit of Cerro Mandango, also known as the "Sleeping Inca," is a popular activity, with local lore claiming it holds a hidden treasure linked to Inca Emperor Atahualpa. The Podocarpus National Park, one of Ecuador's most biodiverse areas, is also nearby. Visitors can enjoy horseback riding, bird watching, yoga, meditation, and spa treatments.
