Seoul, officially the Seoul Metropolitan Government, is the capital and largest metropolis of South Korea. It is located in the center of the Korean Peninsula and is considered a major hub of culture and commerce in East Asia. Seoul has been a capital city since 1394, during the Joseon Dynasty.
The city is known for its blend of ancient history and modern technology, with ancient palaces, temples, and shrines alongside skyscrapers and cutting-edge infrastructure. Key attractions include Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest and most elegant of Seoul's five royal palaces, and Bukchon Hanok Village, which features traditional Korean houses. Other popular destinations are the N Seoul Tower, offering panoramic city views, and the Myeongdong shopping district. Seoul was named the World Design Capital in 2010 and is a national hub for music, entertainment, and cultural industries, spearheading K-pop and the Korean Wave.
Recent developments in Seoul include the Urban Architectural Design Innovation Plan, aimed at transforming Seoul into a dynamic cultural hub. The plan includes reforming building regulations and constructing new facilities. The Great Hangang Project includes the development of a skywalk, infinity pools, a gondola cable car system, and the construction of the Seoul Ring, a large observation wheel. Additionally, four major redevelopment projects are underway in the Daechi, Macheon, Heukseok, and Hongje districts, which will add over 4,000 new homes.
