Pachacamac

Pachacamac is an archaeological site located 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Lima, Peru, in the Lurín Valley. The site spans over 600 hectares (1480 acres) and sits close to the Pacific coast. Pachacamac was an important religious and administrative center, active for over 2,000 years, from around 200 AD until the Spanish arrived in 1533.

Pachacamac, which means "Earth Maker," was named after a powerful creator god associated with earthquakes. The complex contains over 50 structures, including temples, pyramids, palaces, and plazas, built by various cultures such as the Lima, Wari, Ychma, and Inca. Key attractions include the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of Pachacamac, and the Pachacamac Site Museum, which houses artifacts like the Idol of Pachacamac. The site was a major pilgrimage destination, drawing people from diverse cultures to consult the oracle and participate in religious ceremonies. The Inca incorporated Pachacamac into their religion, building a temple to their sun god Inti.
