Mogadishu, also known as Xamar or Hamar, is the capital and most populous city of Somalia, located in the coastal Banaadir region on the Indian Ocean. It has an estimated urban population of over 4 million. Mogadishu has been an important seaport and trade center for centuries, connecting traders across the Indian Ocean.
While the city faced substantial challenges due to civil war, it is currently undergoing revitalization with efforts to rebuild its society and economy. Mogadishu is known for its diverse culture, blending Somali heritage with Arabic, Persian, and Italian influences seen in its architecture and culture. Key attractions include Liido Beach, a popular spot for locals and tourists, and historical sites like the Arba-Rucun Mosque. The Bakaara Market serves as a bustling hub of local commerce.
Recent developments signal a move towards modernization and investment. The Aden Adde International Airport has a new Commercially Important Person (CIP) terminal, reflecting Somalia's aim to become a regional aviation hub. Somalia's first modern bowling alley, the Feynuus Bowling Center, opened last year, representing a sign of revival and a safe social space for younger generations. Somalia was also elected to serve on the African Union Peace and Security Council for the 2026–2028 term, demonstrating its growing role in regional and international peace efforts.
Despite improved security, checkpoints and patrols remain a part of daily life. Mogadishu is steadily rebuilding, with new cafes and reopened streets, but faces ongoing risks. The city is becoming a center for trade growth, with increased commerce with neighboring countries.
