Diplomacy in the Face of Collapse For months, the two men existed in a bizarre state of co-dependency. Atahualpa, still exercising his absolute authority, sent messengers throughout the Andes to gather the required gold. He maintained a court within his prison, attended by women who fed him by hand and gathered his every discarded belonging to be burned, ensuring no commoner could touch what the 'Son of the Sun' had graced. He even learned to play chess with the Spaniards, proving himself a brilliant and capable intellectual peer. The Final Judgment of the Sapa Inca In July 1533, the Spaniards staged a rudimentary court-martial. In a kangaroo court presided over by Pizarro and Almagro, Atahualpa was charged with idolatry, heresy, fratricide, and treason. The emperor, usually so stoic, broke down in tears, offering to double the ransom if only they would spare him.
