Tim Burton (born Timothy Walter Burton on August 25, 1958) is an American filmmaker, animator, writer, and artist celebrated for his distinctively dark, gothic, and imaginative style. Burton's unique aesthetic blends gothic horror and dark fantasy with whimsical and surreal elements, establishing him as a pioneer of goth subculture in Hollywood. He grew up in Burbank, California, and began his career as an apprentice animator for Walt Disney Studios after studying animation at the California Institute of the Arts.
Burton gained prominence with films like Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), Beetlejuice (1988), and Edward Scissorhands (1990). He is also known for directing Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992), as well as producing The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). His work spans genres, including animation, superhero, and supernatural horror. He directed several episodes of the Netflix series Wednesday (2022–present) and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Burton's upcoming project is Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, set to release in 2024.
