Steve Eisman, born on July 8, 1962, is an American businessman and investor. He gained prominence for predicting and profiting from the collapse of the U.S. housing bubble in 2007–2008 by shorting collateralized debt obligations (CDOs). Eisman's insight into the subprime mortgage market was chronicled in Michael Lewis's book, The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, which was later adapted into an Academy Award-winning film where he was portrayed as "Mark Baum" by Steve Carell.
Eisman has over 20 years of experience in financial markets, banking, and housing finance. He began his career as an equity analyst at Oppenheimer & Co., where he was recognized as an All-Star Analyst by Institutional Investor and The Wall Street Journal. He later served as a managing director at Neuberger Berman and portfolio manager for the Eisman Group within the firm's Private Asset Management division. Prior to Neuberger Berman, Eisman founded Emrys Partners, L.P., and also held positions at Chilton Investment Co. and FrontPoint Partners. In 2025, Eisman launched a weekly podcast called "The Real Eisman Playbook". Eisman holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School.
