The Chagga people, also known as the Wachagga, are a Bantu-speaking ethnic group in Tanzania. They primarily live on the fertile slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and the surrounding areas. The Chagga are the third-largest ethnic group in Tanzania, comprised of six subgroups and over 400 clans. They have a unique lifestyle that blends traditional customs with modern living.
The Chagga are known for their agricultural practices, particularly banana and coffee farming. They cultivate diverse gardens with fruits, vegetables, and cash crops, enabling them to trade extensively with other groups in Tanzania and neighboring countries. Traditionally, Chagga society is organized into clans led by chiefs called "mangis". They have special dance ceremonies where they move in a circle to the beat of drums, while also telling stories of their ancestors to keep their traditions and history alive.
