Sabine Hossenfelder is a German theoretical physicist, science communicator, writer, and YouTuber. Born in Frankfurt in 1976, she earned a doctorate in theoretical physics from Goethe University Frankfurt in 2003. After two decades in academia, including positions at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies and the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy, Hossenfelder transitioned to a full-time career as a science communicator. She gained prominence in the early 2020s on YouTube, reaching over 1.7 million subscribers by 2025.
Hossenfelder is known for her work in quantum gravity and her critical views on contemporary physics research, particularly regarding the overuse of aesthetic criteria in theory development. She argues that the pursuit of mathematically "beautiful" theories has hindered progress in fundamental physics. She has published over 80 research papers. Her books include "Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray" (2018) and "Existential Physics: A Scientist's Guide to Life's Biggest Questions" (2022). Her YouTube channel, "Science with Sabine," discusses scientific developments and debunks hype. Hossenfelder's critical stance has, however, led to controversies, including the discontinuation of her affiliation with the Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy in 2025 after complaints about her criticisms.
