Neal Town Stephenson, born October 31, 1959, is an American author renowned for his speculative fiction, encompassing science fiction, historical fiction, cyberpunk, and baroque elements. His works often explore mathematics, cryptography, linguistics, philosophy, currency, and the history of science. Stephenson is credited with coining the term "metaverse" in his 1992 novel Snow Crash, a breakthrough cyberpunk novel that fused Sumerian mythology with high-tech themes.
Stephenson's notable achievements include the Hugo Award for The Diamond Age (1996), the Arthur C. Clarke Award for Quicksilver (2004), and the Prometheus Award for The System of the World (2005). He has also worked outside of writing, including as chief futurist at Magic Leap from 2014 to 2020. In June 2022, Stephenson launched Lamina1, a layer-1 blockchain built for the open metaverse, where he serves as Co-founder and Chairman. His recent publications include Polostan, released in 2024, the first installment in a new series.
