Michael Gambon (1940-2023) was an Irish-English actor known for his extensive career spanning nearly six decades in theatre, television, and film. He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter film series (2004-2011), taking over the role after the death of Richard Harris. Gambon began his acting career with Laurence Olivier at the Royal National Theatre.
Throughout his career, Gambon received three Olivier Awards, four BAFTA TV Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. Some of his notable roles include Philip Marlow in The Singing Detective, Inspector Jules Maigret in Maigret, and his stage performances in A View from the Bridge, Galileo, and Volpone. He was knighted in 1998 by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions to drama. His film credits include Othello (1965), The Insider (1999), Gosford Park (2001), The King's Speech (2010), Victoria & Abdul (2017) and Judy (2019).
