Maggie Kang, born in Seoul, South Korea in 1981 or 1982, is a South Korean and Canadian film director. She is known for creating and co-directing the animated musical urban fantasy film KPop Demon Hunters, released on Netflix in 2025. Kang developed the original concept for the film, drawing inspiration from her Korean heritage, mythology, demonology, and K-pop culture.
Before directing KPop Demon Hunters, Kang worked as a story artist at DreamWorks Animation on films such as Puss in Boots, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Rise of the Guardians. She also served as head of story on The Lego Ninjago Movie at Warner Animation Group. Kang studied animation at Sheridan College. KPop Demon Hunters became a global hit, achieving the most-watched film title in Netflix history within ten weeks of its release. In February 2026, Kang received the Order of Cultural Merit from the South Korean government for promoting Korean culture abroad. The film has garnered numerous accolades, including two Critics Choice Awards, two Golden Globe Awards (Best Motion Picture – Animated and Best Original Song) and a Grammy for its song "Golden". A sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is planned for release in 2029.
