While turning against feels more aggressive, the silent erosion of turning away often does more long-term damage to the bond. The staggering math of intimacy The statistical divide between stable and failing marriages is stark. Couples who stayed together six years after the study responded to bids **86%** of the time. In contrast, those who divorced had an average response rate of just **33%**. This massive gap highlights that intimacy is built through consistent, small acknowledgments rather than grand romantic gestures. Neglect effectively shuts down future communication; when a partner is ignored, the probability of them attempting a "re-bid" drops to just 22%. Building the emotional bank account Consistently turning toward your partner creates an emotional buffer. This history of connection allows couples to maintain a sense of humor during actual conflict. When you know your partner values your presence in small moments, you are less likely to view their frustrations as a personal attack during large ones.
