Josh Shapiro, born on June 20, 1973, is an American politician and lawyer currently serving as the 48th Governor of Pennsylvania, since January 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Shapiro previously served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania from 2017 to 2023 and as a Montgomery County Commissioner from 2012 to 2017. Before holding these positions, Shapiro was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives from 2005 to 2012. He holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Rochester and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University.
Shapiro is known for his focus on expanding Pennsylvania's workforce and investing in the people of Pennsylvania. As governor, he signed an executive order eliminating the four-year college degree requirement for 92% of state government jobs and established the Commonwealth Workers Transformation Program. He has also worked to reform the permitting process and invest in public education. Recent news indicates Shapiro is seeking a second term as governor in the 2026 election. In early 2026, Shapiro is scrutinizing electricity utility profits, advocating for a utility affordability watchdog to examine company profits against ratepayer burdens. He has also proposed a $53.3 billion budget that does not raise taxes and invests in infrastructure.
