John Gray (born December 28, 1951) is an American relationship counselor, lecturer, and author, best known for his 1992 book Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus. This book became a long-term bestseller and the central theme of his subsequent books and career activities. Gray's work has reached millions, with his book spawning a cultural phenomenon that included infomercials, a TV sitcom, audio and video self-help tapes, weekend seminars, and even a Broadway show. He has written over 17 other books linking health and lifestyle.
Gray was involved with Transcendental Meditation for nine years, serving as a personal assistant to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He holds degrees from Maharishi International University and obtained his Ph.D. through correspondence courses, leading some to question his credentials as a professional psychologist. In recent years, Gray has marketed dietary supplements through his website. In 2019, the FDA ordered him to stop making illegal claims for several products. He also had a TV show called "The Book Of John Gray" on the Oprah Winfrey Network that was canceled. In May 2025, John Gray publicly apologized to his wife, Aventer, for inappropriate relationships, detailing his past sexual repression and childhood sexual abuse. He is currently the senior pastor at Love Story Church in Greenville, South Carolina.
