Joe Letteri, born in 1957, is an American visual effects supervisor renowned for his pioneering contributions to computer-generated imagery. He is currently the Senior Visual Effects Supervisor at Wētā FX, a role he has held since 2001. Letteri's early career included work at Metrolight Studios and Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), contributing to films like Jurassic Park and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
Letteri is known for developing industry-standard techniques for creating photorealistic digital effects, including co-developing subsurface scattering for realistic skin rendering, first used on Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. His work spans numerous blockbuster franchises, including The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, King Kong, Avatar, and Planet of the Apes. Letteri's achievements include five Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects, four BAFTA Awards, and four Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards. He won Oscars for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, King Kong, Avatar, and Avatar: The Way of Water. In 2012, he was appointed an honorary Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM). Most recently, Letteri has been working with James Cameron on the Avatar sequels.
