Ian Williams, born on April 26, 1977, is a highly accomplished British professional sailor, recognized as one of the most successful match racing skippers in history. He is best known for winning a record eight World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) Championships. Williams began sailing at a young age and dedicated himself to the sport, leaving his law career in 2005 to pursue sailing professionally.
Williams has secured multiple grade-one event wins, including the Argo Group Gold Cup and the Monsoon Cup. He also holds seven RYA British National Match Racing Championship titles. In addition to match racing, Williams has achieved fleet racing championships in four different keelboat classes and a world title in the M32 catamaran. Currently, Williams sails with the team "Pindar by Manuport Logistics". In early 2026, he secured his ninth World Match Racing Tour title in Shenzhen, China. He also works with the Canadian Northstar SailGP team as a starting coach and was the starting coach for INEOS Britannia in AC37. Williams is slated to compete in the 2026 Congressional Cup, an event he has won five times previously.
