Huw Pill is a Welsh economist currently serving as the Chief Economist and Executive Director for Monetary Analysis and Research at the Bank of England. He assumed this role in September 2021, succeeding Andy Haldane. His term is set to run until September 5, 2027. As Chief Economist, Pill is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and is responsible for the analysis used to inform the Bank's monetary policy decisions, as well as leading supporting research.
Before joining the Bank of England, Pill held several prominent positions in both academia and central banking. He was the Chief European Economist at Goldman Sachs from 2011 to 2018. Prior to that, he worked at the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt, where he served as Deputy Director of Research (2009-2011) and Head of the Monetary Policy Stance Division (2004-2009). Pill also has an academic background, having been a faculty member at Harvard Business School at various times. He holds a BA from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Economics from Stanford University. Recently, in February 2026, Pill gave a speech at Santander UK's macroeconomic event.
