George Soros, born György Schwartz in Budapest, Hungary, on August 12, 1930, is a Hungarian-American investor and philanthropist. Soros survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary during his childhood and later moved to the United Kingdom in 1947. He is known for his success in financial investments, particularly through his Quantum Fund, and for his extensive philanthropy through the Open Society Foundations.
Soros began his financial career in New York City, eventually establishing a hedge fund that generated billions of dollars. He gained notoriety for his speculative strategy of short-selling currencies, famously during the 1992 British pound crisis. Since 1979, Soros has been active in philanthropy, supporting causes related to human rights, democracy, and open societies through the Open Society Foundations, which operates in over 50 countries. He has donated more than $32 billion to these efforts. In June 2023, Soros passed control of the Open Society Foundations and other financial ventures to his son, Alex Soros. As of May 2025, his net worth is estimated to be $7.2 billion.
