George Gideon Oliver Osborne, born on May 23, 1971, is a British retired politician and newspaper editor. He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016 and First Secretary of State from 2015 to 2016 in the Cameron government. A member of the Conservative Party, he was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tatton from 2001 to 2017. Osborne was educated at St. Paul's School, London, and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied history.
Osborne held various roles in the Conservative Party before entering Parliament. As Chancellor, he implemented austerity measures aimed at addressing the economic challenges following the 2008 recession. He oversaw a return to economic growth, a significant reduction in the deficit, and record employment levels. Osborne also championed the 'Northern Powerhouse' initiative to boost economic development across the North of England. Since leaving government in 2016, Osborne has held several high-profile positions. He was the editor of the Evening Standard from 2017 to 2020 and is currently the chair of the British Museum. In December 2025, Osborne joined OpenAI to lead the company's dealings with governments. He also co-hosts the politics podcast "Political Currency" with Ed Balls.
