Eugene Allen "Gene" Hackman (January 30, 1930 – c. February 18, 2025) was a highly regarded American actor whose career spanned over four decades. A versatile performer, he was known for his rugged appearance, naturalism, and emotionally honest performances in a wide array of roles.
Hackman gained prominence for his roles in films like Bonnie and Clyde (1967), The French Connection (1971), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor, The Conversation (1974), and Superman (1978), where he portrayed Lex Luthor. He received a second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Unforgiven (1992). In 2004, he retired from acting.
Hackman passed away around February 18, 2025, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the age of 95 due to heart disease complicated by advanced Alzheimer's disease. His wife, Betsy Arakawa, was found deceased with him. In the months leading up to his death, neighbors noted his declining health. Posthumously, in January 2026, Hackman's Santa Fe estate was sold. Also, Bonhams auctioned off his personal belongings, including awards and memorabilia, in October 2025.
