Anna Lembke, born November 27, 1967, is an American psychiatrist specializing in addiction medicine. She is known for her expertise on the opioid epidemic, addiction to digital media, and the role of dopamine in compulsive overconsumption.
Dr. Lembke is currently a Professor and Medical Director of Addiction Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. She also serves as Program Director of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Fellowship and Chief of the Stanford Addiction Medicine Dual Diagnosis Clinic. Her work involves supporting patients with substance use disorders, behavioral addictions, and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. Lembke appeared in the 2020 Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma, and spoke at Duke University in February 2025 about myths related to the addictive nature of cannabis and psychedelics.
Lembke is the author of Drug Dealer, MD: How Doctors Were Duped, Patients Got Hooked, and Why It's So Hard to Stop (2016) and Dopamine Nation: Finding Balance in the Age of Indulgence (2021), the latter of which became a New York Times and Los Angeles Times bestseller. She has published over a hundred peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and commentaries. Her recent publications focus on topics such as monitoring the opioid epidemic via social media and trends in hallucinogen-associated emergency department visits. Dr. Lembke's work has been featured in major media outlets such as The New York Times and NPR.
