Charles Ellis "Chuck" Schumer, born November 23, 1950, is the senior United States Senator from New York, a position he has held since 1999. A prominent figure in the Democratic Party, Schumer has led the Senate Democratic Caucus since 2017. He served as Senate Majority Leader from 2021 to 2025, becoming the first Jewish Senate leader in U.S. history and the first Senator from New York to hold the position.
Schumer has dedicated his career to fighting for New York, visiting all 62 of its counties every year. He is known for his advocacy for the middle class and has focused on legislation addressing safety, health, consumer protection, and economic issues. His legislative achievements include the Violence Against Women Act and contributions to the Brady Bill for gun control. As Majority Leader, Schumer ushered landmark legislation through the Senate, including the Inflation Reduction Act, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
