Sir Christopher Edward Nolan (born July 30, 1970) is a British-American filmmaker, widely regarded as a significant auteur and a major figure in 21st-century Hollywood. Nolan developed an interest in filmmaking at a young age, later studying English Literature at University College London. He is known for his complex, unconventional narratives and noirish visual aesthetic.
Nolan's filmography includes critically acclaimed and commercially successful films such as Memento (2000), Insomnia (2002), The Dark Knight Trilogy (2005-2012), The Prestige (2006), Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Dunkirk (2017), and Oppenheimer (2023). His work has earned over $6 billion worldwide, making him the seventh-highest-grossing film director. He has received numerous accolades, including two Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture for Oppenheimer. Nolan was appointed a CBE in 2019 and knighted in 2024 for his contributions to film. He is currently directing The Odyssey (2026), an adaptation of Homer's epic poem, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus. The film is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2026.
