Boris Cherny is a software engineer at Instagram, residing in Nara, Japan, where he prototypes and scales new product and infrastructure ideas. However, he is most notably recognized as the creator of Claude Code at Anthropic, a terminal-based coding agent that has garnered significant attention within the developer community. Some have even called it the most discussed developer tool since GitHub Copilot.
Cherny's work focuses on leveraging AI to enhance and transform software engineering practices. He champions the idea of engineers evolving into "commanders" who orchestrate AI-driven coding processes, rather than writing every line of code themselves. Cherny has stated that he hasn't written code by hand in months, with Claude Code generating 100% of his code using Opus 4.5. He also emphasizes the importance of integrating AI tools with other services like Slack and Sentry to create a comprehensive development ecosystem. Previously at Meta, where he reached the designation of IC8, Principal Engineer, he built Undux, a popular state management framework. He is also the author of "Programming TypeScript" by O'Reilly.
