Andrew Mark Cuomo is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 56th governor of New York from 2011 to 2021. A member of the Democratic Party, Cuomo is the son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and also the brother of news anchor Chris Cuomo. He resigned from his position as governor in 2021 following numerous sexual misconduct allegations.
Prior to his role as governor, Cuomo served as the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) under President Bill Clinton from 1997 to 2001. In 2007, he became New York's Attorney General. During his time as governor, Cuomo focused on LGBT rights, women's rights, and economic stimulus in New York State. Some notable achievements during his governorship include the legalization of same-sex marriage and the recreational use of cannabis. His administration also oversaw the construction of the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall, and the reconstruction of the Tappan Zee Bridge and LaGuardia Airport. In 2025, Cuomo ran for mayor of New York City as an independent candidate, but lost to Zohran Mamdani.
