Amy Elizabeth Ray, born on April 12, 1964, is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and activist, best known as one half of the Grammy-winning folk rock duo Indigo Girls. Alongside Emily Saliers, she formed the Indigo Girls in Atlanta in 1985, achieving both critical acclaim and commercial success over a career spanning more than three decades. Rooted in shared passions for harmony and justice, the Indigo Girls have released nearly 20 albums and are known for their social justice activism, supporting causes from LGBTQ+ rights to environmental protection. Ray also founded Daemon Records in 1990, an independent, not-for-profit record label based in Decatur, Georgia, that supports grassroots artists.
In addition to her work with the Indigo Girls, Ray has a successful solo career, with ten studio albums that showcase her diverse musical influences, ranging from punk rock to Americana. Her solo work often delves into political and social issues, reflecting her activism. Ray co-founded Honor the Earth with Emily Saliers and Winona LaDuke in 1993, an organization that creates awareness and support for Native American environmental issues. She identifies as religious and a "Pagan Christian" and has spoken about having gender dysphoria and being genderqueer. Ray continues to tour and record with the Indigo Girls while also pursuing her solo projects and running Daemon Records. Most recently, Ray's solo album, "If It All Goes South," was released in 2022.
