The Me Too movement is a social movement and awareness campaign against sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and rape culture, where survivors share their experiences. It was founded in 2006 by Tarana Burke to support survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low-wealth communities, and to provide pathways to healing. Burke was inspired to create the movement after being unable to respond to a 13-year-old girl who confided in her about being sexually assaulted. She wished she had simply told the girl, "Me too".
The movement gained global prominence in October 2017 after actress Alyssa Milano encouraged women to use the hashtag #MeToo on social media to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual harassment and assault. The hashtag went viral, and millions of people began using it to share their stories. The Me Too movement has sparked debate about how to support survivors while ensuring due process for the accused. The movement's goals include spreading awareness of sexual assault, standing in solidarity with victims, providing resources, and changing laws and policies.
