The Club of Rome is a non-profit, informal organization comprised of intellectuals and business leaders that address pressing global issues. Founded in April 1968 in Rome, Italy, by Aurelio Peccei and Alexander King, it brings together current and former heads of state, UN administrators, high-level politicians, scientists, economists, and business leaders from around the world. The organization aims to promote understanding of global challenges and propose solutions through scientific analysis, communication, and advocacy.
The Club gained considerable public attention in 1972 with its first report, The Limits to Growth, which used computer simulations to suggest that indefinite growth of production and consumption was unsustainable due to resource depletion and pollution. This report sold 30 million copies and sparked debate about global modeling and environmental issues. The Club of Rome has since published numerous reports on topics like environmental degradation, poverty, and ineffective governmental institutions. In 2022, the Club published Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity, a follow-up to The Limits to Growth. As of 2008, the organization is based in Winterthur, Switzerland. Sandrine Dixson-Declève and Paul Shrivastava are the Co-Presidents of the organization.
