The MeToo movement is a social movement and awareness campaign against sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and rape culture. Tarana Burke, a social activist and survivor, initially used the phrase "Me Too" on Myspace around 2006 to promote "empowerment through empathy" among women of color who had experienced sexual abuse. The movement seeks to empower survivors through solidarity and strength in numbers, demonstrating how widespread sexual assault and harassment are, especially in the workplace.
In October 2017, the movement gained global attention after allegations against film producer Harvey Weinstein surfaced. Actress Alyssa Milano encouraged women to use the hashtag #MeToo on social media to illustrate the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault. The hashtag went viral, with numerous high-profile figures sharing their experiences. The movement aims to create a safe platform for survivors to share their stories, raise awareness, provide resources, and advocate for policy changes. It has also sparked conversations about sexual violence, consent, and the roles men can play in addressing harmful behavior.
