Founded in 2017 in memory of ultrarunner Stephen Jones, the race takes place in October and is known for its challenging terrain, which includes desert canyons, red-rock mesas, and mountain ranges exceeding 10,000 feet in elevation. The course begins and ends in Moab, following the path of the Colorado River, and features a cumulative elevation gain and loss of 31,564 feet. Participants have a 112 to 117-hour cutoff time to complete the race.
The event is part of Destination Trail's Triple Crown, along with the Bigfoot 200 and Tahoe 200. The Moab 240 route consists of a single loop flanked by Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. The race includes 15 aid stations, five of which are designated as sleep stations. David Goggins, known for his endurance feats, has participated in the Moab 240, finishing 22nd overall in 2025. The 2026 Moab 240 is scheduled for October 9-14.
