The Log Lift is a staple event in strongman competitions, challenging athletes to lift a log with handles from a platform to their chest and then press it overhead with outstretched arms. The athlete must hold the position for two seconds at the referee's signal. Knees should be bent during the lift but legs straight at the completion.
The event's origins trace back to the 1980 World's Strongest Man competition, where Bill Kazmaier lifted 157 kg (346 lb). Early logs were literal tree trunks with handles, unlike the balanced, specialized equipment used today. The World Log Lift Championships, also known as the World Log Lift Challenge, is an annual competition that attracts strongmen from around the globe. It began as part of the Strongman Champions League and has been featured in Giants Live.
Žydrūnas Savickas dominated the event for many years, setting numerous records. In 2021, Cheick "Iron Biby" Sanou broke Savickas's record, and in 2024, set the current world record at 231 kg (509 lb). The log lift continues to be a test of strength and technique in the strongman world.
